Etiquette in Vietnam
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Vietnam.
- Greeting A slight nod and handshake are usual. Use a title and the given name; names are written family name first.
- Dining Wait to be seated and for the host to begin. Do not leave chopsticks standing in a bowl.
- Home Remove shoes when entering a home and many temples.
- Dress Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas and temples.
- Gifts Give and receive with both hands. Avoid giving four of anything or yellow flowers.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
