Etiquette in United States
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in United States.
- Greeting A firm handshake and eye contact are standard in business. First names are common quickly.
- Dining Tipping is expected: roughly 15 to 20% in restaurants, and for taxis, hair salons and many services.
- Talk Small talk is common, and 'How are you?' is often a greeting rather than a question. Avoid asking about income or age.
- Time Be on time for work and appointments; a few minutes late is acceptable for casual gatherings.
- Public Personal space is valued, and queues are respected.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
