Etiquette in Sweden
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Sweden.
- Greeting Handshake and direct eye contact. First names are used readily, even with seniors.
- Time Punctuality is very important.
- Home Take off your shoes in homes. Bring a small gift for a host.
- Talk Quiet is comfortable. Fika, a coffee and pastry break, is a social ritual.
- Public Queue with a number ticket where offered. Respect for nature and the right of public access (allemansrätten) comes with a duty to leave no trace.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
