Etiquette in Saudi Arabia
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Saudi Arabia.
- Greeting Greet with 'Assalamu alaykum'. Handshakes are usual between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Dress Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Follow local guidance for what is expected in public.
- Dining Eat with the right hand. Accepting coffee and dates when offered is polite.
- Time Prayer times shape the day and some shops close briefly. During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daylight.
- Talk Show respect for religion and the royal family. Avoid photographing people without asking.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
