Etiquette in Nigeria
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Nigeria.
- Greeting Greetings are important and unhurried. Greet elders first and use titles. Handshakes may include a slight bow.
- Dining Eat and pass items with your right hand. Hosts are generous; accept at least a little.
- Dress Smart, neat dress is valued. Cover up in conservative areas.
- Talk Ask after family and health before getting to business.
- Time Social events often start late; business is more punctual.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
