Etiquette in Morocco
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Morocco.
- Greeting A handshake, often followed by placing a hand on the heart. Greetings are unhurried.
- Dining Meals are shared from a central dish, eaten with the right hand or bread. Accepting mint tea is part of hospitality.
- Dress Dress modestly in towns and cover up for visits. Many mosques do not admit non-Muslims, so check first.
- Talk Haggling is normal in the souks. Ask permission before taking photos of people.
- Gifts Bring pastries or sweets if invited to a home.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
