Etiquette in Kenya
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Kenya.
- Greeting A handshake and a friendly 'Jambo' or 'Habari' are expected. Greetings take time, and rushing seems rude.
- Dining Wait to be invited to eat. Eat with the right hand if food is shared by hand.
- Dress Dress neatly; avoid camouflage clothing, which is reserved for the military.
- Public Ask before photographing people, and expect a request for payment in some places.
- Time Time can feel flexible at social events.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
