Etiquette in Ireland
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Ireland.
- Greeting A handshake and friendly chat. Small talk and humour are welcomed.
- Dining In a pub, rounds of drinks are the custom: take your turn. A tip of about 10% is typical in restaurants.
- Talk Be careful about assuming Irish and British identities are the same.
- Time Be punctual for work; social events can be relaxed.
- Home Bring a small gift such as wine or flowers if invited to a home.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
