Etiquette in Greece
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Greece.
- Greeting A handshake and eye contact. Friends exchange cheek kisses. A nod can mean 'no' when the head tilts back.
- Dining Meals are long and shared; hosts insist on paying. Say 'Yamas' when toasting.
- Dress Cover shoulders and knees at monasteries and churches.
- Time Evenings start late; dinner after 9 pm is normal.
- Talk Avoid joking about national history or neighbours.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
