Etiquette in Germany
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in Germany.
- Greeting A firm handshake, eye contact and the formal 'Sie' until you are invited to use 'du'.
- Time Punctuality is important: being on time means arriving a little early.
- Public Rules, such as recycling, quiet hours (Ruhezeit) on Sundays and waiting at red lights, are widely observed.
- Dining Say 'Guten Appetit' and wait for everyone to be served. Round up the bill or tip 5 to 10%.
- Talk Direct communication is normal and not meant as rudeness.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
