Etiquette in France
Everyday customs that visitors and newcomers often find useful in France.
- Greeting Say 'Bonjour' when entering shops and restaurants. Friends greet with cheek kisses (la bise).
- Dining Meals are unhurried. Keep your hands visible on the table and do not ask for the bill until you are ready to leave.
- Talk Try a few words of French first, which is much appreciated.
- Dress Neat, stylish dress is valued in cities and restaurants.
- Home Bring flowers (not chrysanthemums) or wine when invited.
These are general customs, not rules or legal advice. They differ between regions, generations and families, and they change over time. For visas, residency and legal requirements always use the destination country's official government sources.
